Thursday July 23rd
One of my very clever Twitter followers started a new account today: @GrassholesBC. Its purpose is to tweet pictures of lawns – brown and dry or lush and green, good and bad. They will retweet whatever lawn pics you send them, so I tweeted a picture of my own lawn (mostly dirt and some brown tufts) and also a picture of a house with lush green grass that I spotted while out for lunch. Once I started “green-spotting”, I was shocked at just how much green there was to see! I took into account the green grass due to shaded areas – fences, trees, buildings, etc – but you could really tell which homes were watering regularly. The grass was lush green even though they were on the north side of the street, completely open to the sun with nothing shading the grass. Now I’m not saying that they are purposely disobeying the bylaws – maybe they live out of town and they don’t know about the restrictions and their sprinklers come on automatically. Maybe. In which case, even if bylaw officers decided to stop by, nobody would be home and the $250 fine would sit in their mailbox for months, unopened while the sprinklers keep the lawn nice and green. Huh.
With hundreds of calls each day to bylaw officers, they can’t possibly check out every place. This account doesn’t help, but for me, it allows me to vent my disappointment in people. I sacrifice daily to save water, so when I see someone who doesn’t, it makes me resentful. I’m a rule-follower by nature, so in most cases will obey the rules. When people think the rules don’t apply to them, it makes me angry. Makes me a little spiteful too. So if tweeting a picture (which doesn’t show an address) allows me to vent even just a little, I appreciate it! So thank you, @GrassholesBC, for giving me an outlet for all this scorn I’m feeling. You are likely going to get a shit-ton of backlash, people saying it’s immature and whatnot, but I just want you to know I appreciate you. 😀
Moving on, there’s not much change to the schedule. There was one thing at 7:40 on BT, but that’s about it. Carry on.
