You Can’t Play This!
If you’ve been reading this blog for more than a week, you know that I love, love, LOVE the JRFM morning show! I have been fans of theirs since the late 90’s, and when I can’t listen to the show in the morning I often stream it online later to hear what they talked about. Because I like to hear what they have to say.
Karen is a riot. She makes no apologies for her bluntness, which may explain her having been married more than once (the exact number is a mystery!) Her sharp tongue is indicative of her intelligence and personality – she’s quick, don’t even bother trying to pull the wool over her eyes. I love it when she laughs at herself – this self-deprecating humour makes her instantly likeable!
Clay is the metropolitan cowboy – quick-witted, uber-friendly, and smells as good as he looks. He’s got his fingers in lots of pies (acting, voice overs, etc) and is a devoted husband and father. There’s no question that he’s committed to his family, and this trait alone makes me admire him to no end!
Both hosts are no-nonsense, which makes this pairing often volatile and always entertaining. There was one time when they were really snarky with each other on air for many days in a row, so much so that I e-mailed Karen and begged her and Clay to cut it out – it was hard to listen to. She replied with a 2-word note: send help! LOL! Love her…
With the addition of Purvey (whom I think is the cat’s pajamas and you should totally go apply for a date with him HERE!), the show is different. For the first time in 19 years, there’s someone in the studio with them. At least, I don’t ever remember there being someone else, except for the few times Cory Ashworth joined them. Now there’s a different dynamic – there’s an opportunity for one person to be ganged up on, and there’s a new perspective on things – music, news, trends, etc. Purvey adds comedy, silliness, and controversy. It’s a good fit, in my opinion.
Were you waiting for a but?
Well, here it is: BUT, I am having a problem with the new contest ‘You Can’t Win This!” Most of the time I am on board with JRFM contests, but this one sucks the big corn-pipe!
- The first question is so hard that, after 3 guesses, we are no closer to getting to question 2.
- The jackpot goes up by $5 with each guess, but only ONE guess is taken per day.
- After the person guesses wrong, they are sent away with a rude good-bye. A Kevin Spacey smack-down is NOT funny. It’s just not.
- Nor is saying “you can’t play again for 30 days!” What? Why? Seems rather unfair, no?
- And what else is NOT funny is saying “mmmbuh bye!” in unison.
So, the person risked public humiliation for $210 and then ended up getting humiliated live on air. Huh. It wouldn’t be bad if they weren’t so dismissive. I know it’s supposed to be funny, but that’s not the kind of funny I want to hear. It’s akin to “You are the weakest link. Goodbye.”
Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe people really like to listen to others being told “buh-bye”?
I’m sorry, I don’t. And I won’t be listening to that segment anymore. But I WILL tune in for Karen’s 7 O’Clock HUH and any other interesting things they discuss. Because I value their opinions about things and I love the new banter. I just don’t like this part very much…
