Week 52: the Dead Zone

Posted on Dec 27, 2016

We are already into it: Week 52 started on Christmas Day and ends January 1st. The Dead Zone. Our regular radio hosts are away, and the contests have been closeted until the new year.

This is the worst week of the year for those of us who like to play radio contests, but it is probably also the most relaxing time. With no compelling reason to turn on the radio, we find out what are real tastes are – do we flip around from station to station, or do we tune in to a certain one simply for the music? Or do we just keep it off and enjoy the silence, tuning in only to our families?

For example, I turned on the radio at home to listen to Christmas music while I cooked. QMFM fit the bill. After an hour of that, I switched over to Zed for something a bit zippier, and was surprised to hear Cruby on air! It was Saturday or Sunday morning, before 11am (I can’t remember which day it was, the days are all one big jumble, but I know I was shocked to hear them.) What were they doing there?? Was it a pre-recorded session? Didn’t sound like it.

And I couldn’t listen long enough to find out – I got kicked out of the kitchen shortly after that. Heh. The only other time we turned on the radio was when we were in the truck driving to and from Grouse Mountain. We had CFOX on for a bit, then Peak on the way home. The Peak played the entire reading of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and it was fantastic!!! It played for our entire drive home from Grouse – it was the best drive ever! Kudos to Peak for playing it.

It’s unlikely that there will be any contests played this week, but I will keep my ear to the ground to see if *maybe* there’s a game afoot somewhere. If not, that just means we will be well rested for the onslaught of fun stuff coming in January! It might not be during the first week, but by the second week we should see some action.

Last year the major contests started on Monday the 11th, so I’d expect them to start up on Monday the 9th this time. The announcements should happen during that first week though, so I’ll be surprised if they aren’t exactly like this:

QMFM – a trip

Virgin – Beat Your Bills

Rock 101 – Viva Rock Vegas

CFOX – Splash or Cash

Jack – Name That Tune

JRFM – Red Solo Cup

Zed – $10,000 Song

Peak – Perfect 10

Kiss – trip

Members will have access to the posts (and tweets) that will be keeping track of all names called, Red Solo Cup guesses, trivia answers, etc. If you are on my list of people to call if I hear their name, that still stands – I will call you even if you aren’t a member.

I’m also looking forward to some movement on the hosts front – Kiss needs either a new morning show, or another person to co-host with Ara. Either will do, but it can’t stay the same. I wonder what’s going on behind the scenes over there – I’d love to be a fly on that wall!

The Peak needs a change too. Will they bring in new blood or stick to what they’re doing now? “Jawnson” is not working for me. AT ALL! You know who would be kick-ass at that job? Todd Hancock. He’s got his finger on the pulse of the Vancouver music scene, he’s got connections, experience, talent, and a go-getter attitude with a humbleness that suits The Peak’s brand. He could potentially give Peak a huge ratings boost. Who’s in charge over there?? Get me his number! I’ve got a proposal…
