The Wrap:

This year we had an influx of new contests and not all of them were winners. It’s hard to come up with new games, I don’t envy the promo peeps who have to think them up. The clear winners this year were the Zed Zillioinaire (brilliant!) and Peak’s Wheel of Tickets (surprisingly.) JR did their best to mix things up, throwing in Red Solo Cup, Cash Cow, and trivia with Check In/Cash Out. They played CICO all freaking year and it bored me to death. I hope it went out with the decade and died a slow, painful death. LOL!

What I’d like to see in the new year are more creative games, contests which bring back the fun. The “What would you do for Aerosmith” on Jack was an attempt at this but it missed the mark. The Zillionaire was magic – had us thinking and creating in a myriad of ways. What other ways could the stations keep us engaged? Scavenger hunts are kind of fun but very few people have the time to play them (and who wants to go running all over town? Not me!) Guessing games are too easy because everything can be googled these days, but if they made it random it could be super fun! Like “guess what colour my underwear are,” or “what did I have for dinner last night?” These are the only types of things which can’t be googled, and they might have us guessing for many plays.

Since radio is an aural medium, it has always had to be a game we play with our ears. Obviously ZFX is the most brilliant (and frustrating) game of them all. However, with everyone having access to the internet these days, maybe we can move towards some visual games too. How about a word scramble? Have 50 letters spelling out a phrase which may or may not use all of the letters. People would come up with all sorts of words and phrases which would be entertaining as heck! Or how about a picture puzzle, where one piece is revealed at each play and people can guess what/where/who it is? Local landmarks, male celebrities, female musicians, modes of transportation, animals, etc. Could be interesting.

My favourite games are those games of choice where you dare to choose one or the other. Cash or Cars? Splash or Cash? Stay or Play? Oooh, maybe a stay or play game where caller 9 gets $500 or they can play for more (or less!) If they STAY, they keep the cash if and only IF the next player chooses to PLAY. If the next player also chooses to STAY, the first player loses the cash and gets nothing (no crappy consolation prizes but they get to play again.) This is similar to Bad Santa except I predict a lot more steals.

See? It’s hard to come up with new games…

The Good:

These are the contests I loved the most:

  • ZFX (predictable) – vexing and addictive
  • Zillionaire – SO FUN!
  • Spring Kaching – instant cash prize. The BEST!
  • Group trips – call-in is fair and I want SO BADLY to win one of these!
  • Bad Santa – I couldn’t play this year but it was fun to listen to. If I could’ve played, I would’ve!
  • Splash or Cash – a dangerous game with quick resolution.
  • Peak Prize Wheel – I enjoyed this. The wheel was REAL! There were some really good prizes too. Play this again please!
  • Bank Error, Beat the Bank, Scratch Win or Bust – these were good because I had at least a *chance* at getting to play. Love the instant cash aspect!

The Bad:

These are the contests I hated:

  • Where in the World is Mr. Fox – hosts gave us the wrong info and had us running around for nothing. Stupid clues. Hate this game.
  • Check In/Cash Out – required constant attention and odds of being called were slim. Listen five times per day and remember to check in every night. Blech. No thanks.
  • All montages – fucking HARD! Too hard to win.
  • Trivia games – No. Just stop it.
  • Text – in games – even if they are fun to listen to (like Match Game) I hate them because I have no chance of playing.
  • Name calling games – all suck because I will never be called, except the Rock 101 game where he opened the lines if the person didn’t call back. That was good.
  • Jack’s Mixed Tape – no one will ever win. Waste of time.

The Meh:

Meh. These were okay but I wouldn’t go out of my way to play or listen.

  • Listen For This Song games – meh. They’re okay. If I like that station anyway, it’s a passive game. Hard to win but easy to play while doing housework.
  • Cash or Carz – fair game. Great grand prize.
  • Collect Words games – a bazillion text-in entries. Boo. But easy entry so not much to complain about.
  • What Would You Do For Aerosmith – not enticing enough to listen to/watch live, but interesting to check out when they post on socials.
