Sunday Feb 21
Virgin is bringing back the Defeat Your Debt codeword collecting game this week. Listen for a code word at 7, 8, and 9am and again at 3, 4, and 5pm. You have five minutes (5!) to either text that word in to 945945 or you can email it to them at email@example.com with “Destroy Your Debt” in the subject line. Only use one of those to enter – don’t text AND send an email because you will be disqualified. After the five minutes they will call ONE person back. They MUST answer the phone in order to qualify. If they do, then THEY are the only person who has qualified. To be clear, simply texting in does NOT qualify you – they must call you back to qualify you.
Here’s the thing: there are 12 stations across the country playing this game from now until April 15th. Each of them are taking six qualifiers per day. When all is said and done, there will be 2736 people in the draw for that $100,000. But… $100,000!!! That’s definitely worth playing for, but I’ve been down this road before – I bent over backwards to get all the code words and not once did I qualify. That’s a LOT of effort for zero reward. That’s all of March and half of April, tied to Virgin for 6 x 5 minutes per day. No thanks! Therefore, I will NOT be collecting code words fulltime. I’ll grab one here and there, whenever I think of it and it fits into my schedule. Please do not count on me for code words.
What you CAN count on me for is Rock 101’s Memory game. I try to call in every time but I’ve only gotten through maybe three times, never the right caller. I only want to play so I can open more cases – even if there’s a match I will not choose it because I don’t want $500, I want $5000! Once the $5000 is won, THEN I will take a $500 prize. Why kick myself out of the running for a mere $500?! I’d rather just keep opening cases to reveal more matches – the more people who take the $500, the less competition there will be for the $5000. I’m devious that way… heh.
Anyway, $500 is still a nice prize so I’ll help you out by keeping track of the cases. Newsletter subscribers will have access to it – the link and password are in this week’s newsletter. I’ve listed them in alphabetical order for quick reference – if there are two numbers beside the name, that means matching cases have been revealed. If they have been crossed out, someone already claimed that prize. As Willy says, “I wish you good luck.”
Another thing I gave up on was the CFOX name game. Who has time to listen every friggin’ HOUR?! I guess if you’re sitting at a desk and you’ve got fuck all else going on, you can wait for the name to be called. This would be fine if they did it right on the hour, but ffs they do it at such random times, nobody could possibly waste their whole day on the edge of their seat just waiting for a name to be called. That’s ridiculous.
I started listening for names when the game started on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon I’d had enough. Again, if it were ON THE HOUR I could swing it, but these are the times they called names on Tuesday: 9:24, 10:14, 11:28, 12:38, 1:23, 2:15, 3:04, and I missed the 4pm one. Then on Wednesday it was 9:15, 10:18, 11:15, 12:31, 1:15, 2:23, 3:15, 4:15ish. They are all over the map! And I suppose that’s their strategy, they want people to just listen all day and be glued to their radio every second. But jesus christ, people have to WORK and SHOP and LIVE and DO THINGS! I had to arrange my chores for after the name was called, and those hours when it didn’t happen until half way through, I had to rush just to get anything done. Fuck off.
Hmmm… I guess it pissed me off more than I realized… anyway, I’m not listening for any more names. I had entered my husband but for the measly $100 or $200 or $300 if you’re lucky, it’s just not worth my time. Lame game.
Move 103.5 has a one night stay at the Marriott downtown. You can win that at 8:05 by finishing the lyrics of a song. I don’t know what happens if the player doesn’t know the lyric, I guess they will take the next caller?
The Breeze is playing Artist of the Day until April 2nd so there are six more weeks of texting them and not having them call you back. Good times…
Jack’s Trivia continues this week and starts off with the question “one billion people tuned in to watch this wedding” and the answer of course is Charles and Diana. It seems people are only able to get one or two questions in a row (because who can remember the 80’s?! I was stoned for most of them tbh) so it’s going to take a loooong time to get to the final $10,000 question. I think I’ll wait it out – $200 is nice but it’s not worth being out of the running for the $10k.
JR doesn’t have anything great (enter online for a virtual concert – blah) but the Head Blank game could win you $50 to Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe in Kits! If you’ve never been to Sophie’s, you simply MUST go! This is a far better prize than the Secret Word prize, $25 to Skip The Dishes. Any restaurant personnel will tell you these meal delivery businesses gouge the restaurants so they make nothing off the food you order through Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats, etc. If you want to support the restaurant, order directly from the restaurant and pick it up. If you want to support Skip The Dishes, then order through them. Personally we always order from the restaurant and pick it up so we support local businesses. But that’s me. You do you, Boo.
The Peak has a fun game coming up but that doesn’t start until next week so I’ll tell you about it in the next post. Zed has nothing of interest besides the possibility of $500 on Alphabucks. Kiss? Nada. They don’t seem to want to pay for listeners… what’s up with that?!
Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day. The shirts look a little different this year and they also have really cute toques and masks. Go buy one and support anti-bullying initiatives through CKNW’s Kids Fund. Even if you don’t buy any merch, just wear a pink shirt on Wednesday. Because bullies suck.
